Are we normal yet? We are easing our way into this harvest, picking just a ton of Chardonnay in late August followed by four tons of Merlot and Cabernet Franc the past couple of weeks. These shots are from Mendocino: that is a bin of de-stemmed Merlot and a cluster of Cabernet Franc. Yields are light in this drought year but there is little to no rot that we’ve seen, and the small berries are auspicious for fine wines Cellar Note: Our 2019 Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are both tasting lovely; the Pinot in particular is starting to come into itself from what has been an awkward phase since COVID. We will hope to have holiday specials available soon!

While we are always careful not to conclude too much from any given award or competition, we’re nonetheless pleased to announce that our 2016 Devoto Garden Vineyard Pinot Noir has been awarded a Double Gold in the 2020 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, which was completed on January 10th. It is also gratifying to achieve this over two consecutive vintages, our 2015 having also won Double Gold last year This particular competition is huge, the largest in North America. There were over sixty-five judges evaluating nearly 6,700 wines from over 1,000 wineries. The number of Pinot Noirs alone is daunting, with Pinot Noir broken down into 13 different categories based on price, ours distinguishing itself in the very competitive $36-$39.99 category. While an argument can be made that gold medal distribution may correlate more with random chance than wine quality, owing to many factors, we like to think that Double Gold awards are a bit more indicative of underlying quality — where Double Gold indicates Gold unanimity amongst the judges and thus would seem to mitigate factors like the idiosyncrasies and biases of individual judges.
